Your First Therapy Session: What to Expect (and How to Prepare)

Feeling a little nervous before a first session is completely normal — most people do. Knowing what to expect can take the edge off.

The first session is mostly about you talking, at your pace

Your initial appointment (about 60 minutes) is a gentle conversation, not an interrogation. We'll ask what brought you in, a little about your history, and what you'd like to feel different. You share only what you're comfortable sharing.

There's no "right" way to do it

You don't need to prepare a speech or have your feelings neatly organized. If you're not sure where to begin, that's okay — starting is our job to help with.

A few things that help

Jot down a couple of things you'd like to work on. Note any questions about approach, scheduling or insurance. Arrive a few minutes early (or log in early for telehealth) so you can settle.

By the end, you'll have a sense of fit

We'll talk about what ongoing support might look like — and whether we're the right match. Fit matters more than anything; if we're not the one for you, we'll help you find someone who is.
